Do Stink Bugs Stink?

While many animals in the animal kingdom possess misleading names, stink bugs, including both green and brown marmorated stink bugs, carry the physical properties resembling their names and are capable of emitting noticeable odors. The two most common stink bugs possess small scent glands as defense mechanisms. The small scent glands for which stink bugs are named appear on the dorsal side of the thorax. Stress brought on by unwanted handling or other disturbance causes the glands to release an often lingering, foul odor. Many times, homeowners report smelling the odor after both accidentally and intentionally vacuuming the insects. Crushing stink bugs also releases the smell from the glands.
